Today Google, chatbots are intelligent assistants for human beings. They can perform several human tasks like managing calendars, making.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced in May at the I/O 2022 conference that the company would roll out its experimental LaMDA 2 conversational AI model to select beta users over the course of the following months. That time of year has finally arrived. On Thursday, Google’s artificial intelligence team announced that curious users could sign up for early access to the model.
As regular readers know, LaMDA is the NLP model that got a Google researcher fired because it was too intelligent. Artificial intelligence (AI) models called natural language processors (NLPs) are the brains behind Siri, Alexa, and other chatbots and the backbone of real-time translation and subtitling services. A computer uses natural language processing technology whenever you have a conversation with it.
Even though natural language processing (NLP) technology has come a long way in the past decade, the phrase “I’m sorry, I didn’t quite get that” continues to haunt the dreams of many early Siri adopters. Modern models are taught hundreds of billions of parameters, translate hundreds of languages in real-time, and remember the nuances of a previous conversation to use in subsequent ones.
Beta users will be able to play around with the NLP in a safe, presumably supervised environment, thanks to Google’s AI Test Kitchen. Today, Google is kicking off a limited rollout of access for Android users in the US, and over the next few weeks, they will expand to iOS devices. In order to demonstrate LaMDA’s features, the program will provide a series of guided demos.
To quote Tris Warkentin and Josh Woodward of Google smartwatches Research and Labs divisions, respectively: The first demo, titled “Imagine It,” gives you the freedom to name a location and provides avenues for further mental exploration “published on Google’s AI blog on a Thursday.
Simply tell the ‘List It’ demo what you want to achieve or what you want to learn more about, and LaMDA will generate a list of tasks to help you reach your goals. Additionally, the ‘Talk About It (Dogs Edition)’ demo allows you to have a light-hearted, free-flowing conversation about dogs and only dogs, testing LaMDA’s ability to maintain topic control.”
Google Blenderbot 3
Taye, the name given to chatbot AIs that goes full-Nazi, is indicative of the industry norm of prioritizing safe, responsible interactions. Thankfully, Microsoft and the rest of the AI field learned from that incredibly embarrassing incident, which is why Midjourney and Dall-E 2 have such stringent restrictions on what users can have them conjure and why Blenderbot 3 on Facebook can only discuss certain topics. Not that I think we can completely rely on the system, though.
To discover even more problems with the model, “we’ve run dedicated rounds of adversarial testing,” as Warkentin and Woodward put it. Red teaming experts “have uncovered more damaging, although subtle, outputs,” the authors write. Harmful or toxic replies based on biases in its training data and inability to distinguish between benign and hostile cues are two examples. It’s very similar to the behaviour of several contemporary AIs.
